Discovery! The composition of the Hagahos of the Maharam Shik on the sefer ‘Mitzvos Hashem’ — large portions not previously printed

The sefer Mitzvos HaShem by Rabbi Boruch son of Zvi Hirsch Heilperin of Skahl, stands as one of the most beloved commentaries on mitzvos among the great generations. Since its initial publication in Lvov 1792, it has been warmly received and repeatedly reprinted. The eighth edition, printed in Pressburg 1846, introduced numerous glosses throughout the sefer by the esteemed Rabbi Moshe Sheik, also known as ‘Maharam Shik’, a distinguished disciple of the Chasam Sofer, which were penned on the sheets of the sefer.

Presented here is a manuscript in the handwriting of the Maharam Shik — likely part of a comprehensive composition — where he imparts his comments on the aforementioned sefer ‘Mitzvos Hashem.’ This manuscript significantly differs from what was printed in the Pressburg edition of the sefer Mitzvos Hashem, showcasing numerous linguistic changes and offering many new comments previously unpublished!

Rabbi Moshe Shik ZY”A (1807-1879),

beloved student of the distinguished Rabbi Maran HaChasam Sofer ZY”A, was revered for his exceptional scholarship and holiness. Renowned for his unwavering commitment and asceticism, he served as the Dayan in Yergin near Pressburg. In 1861, he was appointed to Rav of Chust and the surroundings, where he nurtured numerous outstanding students of the generation. Maharam Shik’s enlightening works have been printed on various topics, including Shut, on the 613 Mitzvot, on the Torah and Moedim, chapters of Avot, sermons, and more.

Manuscripts by Maharam Shik that are unpublished are exceedingly rare!
