Lot 72:
Letter by the Beirach Moshe of Satmar Regarding His 1949 Visit to Chicago
A complete, handwritten, and signed letter by Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum, known as the Beirach Moshe of Satmar, during his time as Rav of Sighet. Dated Thursday, Parshas Vayigash 1949. Addressed to Reb Chananya Yomtov Lipa Perl, a highly esteemed member of the Chicago Jewish community, the letter talks about the Rabbi’s plan to visit the city.
In the letter, the Beirach Moshe mentions how Perl kindly hosted him on a previous trip to Chicago. Now, aware that Perl’s wife isn’t well, the Rabbi doesn’t want to bother them and is seeking help to find another place to stay. He suggests checking with Reb Chananya Yomtov Lipa Shmalhausen for possible accommodations.
Reading between the lines, you can sense the tough times the Rebbe was going through. Emphasizing his sincerity, the Rebbe writes: "I’m sure you understand that if it were not necessary, I would not think of traveling now."
This unique letter not only shares a piece of the Beirach Moshe’s personal life but also shows his humble and caring side.
