Halachos Gedolos, Zolkiev 1810 – signature and glosses of the great Gaon Rabbi Elazar Moshe HaLevi Horovitz of Pinsk
Halachos Gedolos attributed to Rabbi Shimon of Kiara, Zolkiew 1811. Between the pages of the book appears a long and handsome scholarly comment on the subject of ‘Osso Vess Beno’ [=him and his son], signed ‘
Elazar Moshe‘. Also some other short corrections – in the handwriting of the well-known Gaon Rabbi Elazar Moshe Halevi Horovitz Rabbi of Pinsk author of ‘Ohel Moshe’.
The great Gaon Rabbi Elazar Moshe Halevi Horovitz of Pinsk (1818 – 1890), one of the great geniuses of Lithuania, a close student of Rabbi Aryeh Leib Shapira rabbi of Kovno. In his youth he served in the rabbinate of the city of Monastritch. From 1860 served as Rabbi of Pinsk. Known as one of the great sages of his generation, and answered to halachic queries from all over Europe. His commentaries were included in the Vilna Talmud. His responsa is in his work ‘Ohel Moshe’.
It is said in the name of the ‘Chazon Ish’ that Rabbi Elazar Moshe is one of the greats of his generation and his opinions are close to Ruach HaKodesh [Devine spirit] (Uvdos VeHanhagos mi-Beit Brisk, S.Y Meller, vol. 4 p.305).
On the cover of the book is a listing of the ownership ‘Belonging to Abba Chai Tzipesh’ (perhaps a family member of Rabbi Moshe Tzipesh, brother-in-law of Rabbi Bezalel Margaliot, Rabbi of Ostroh and Rabbi Mordechai Margaliot, Rabbi of Satnov).
