Letter and Halachic Responsum of the Baal Mareh Yechezkel, Founder of the Desh Dynasty – A Rare and Unpublished Manuscript!

A complete handwritten letter and halachic teshuvah, entirely in the ksav yad kodesh and with the signature of the Baal Mareh Yechezkel, Rebbe Yechezkel Panet –
containing a previously unpublished section!

Written in 1839 to Reb Yosef Ber Kahana Heller of Karsna—a descendant of the Baal Kuntras HaSfeikos and ancestor of the Baal Yalkut HaGershuni.

The letter includes a halachic discussion on Krias HaMegillah and the requirement to recite a bracha before mitzvos, later published in Shu”t Mareh Yechezkel (Siman 125).

At the end of the letter, several previously unpublished lines appear, where the Rebbe instructs that a section from his chiddushim on Maseches Pesachim be copied for the recipient. He also extends personal regards to his wife.

The Baal Mareh Yechezkel
Rebbe Yechezkel Panet 1783 – 1845 was one of the early Chassidic masters. Born in Bilitz, Poland, he studied under HaGaon HaRav Baruch Frankel-Teomim (Baal Baruch Taam) and HaRav Shmuel Landau, Av Beis Din of Prague (son of the Noda B’Yehuda). Later, he became a talmid muvhak of the Maggid of Kozhnitz, the Chozeh of Lublin, and primarily, Rebbe Mendel of Rimanov, Zy”a, whose teachings he transcribed in Menachem Tzion.

His teshuvah in Shu”t Mareh Yechezkel (Siman 104) is regarded as a fundamental letter in Chassidus, so much so that Rebbe Chaim Halberstam, Baal Divrei Chaim of Sanz, Zy”a, would read it with great emotion and tears (see Menachem Tzion, Sifsei Tzaddikim edition, p. 199).

His seforim include Mareh Yechezkel on Torah, Drush, and Shu”t. His descendants include Rebbe Menachem Mendel Panet of Dezh, Baal Maaglei Tzedek and Rebbe Chaim Betzalel Panet, Av Beis Din of Tasnad, Baal Derech Yivchar.
