Chavos Daas, Lemberg 1799, First Edition – Very Rare!

Chavos Daas, chiddushim on Yoreh De’ah, from
Raban Shel Yisroel, Rabbeinu Yaakov Lorberbaum of Lissa, zy”a. Printed in Lemberg 1799 –
First Edition.

Yesod HaHora’ah – The Author’s First Sefer
Chavos Daas was the first and most foundational sefer of Rabbeinu Yaakov Lorberbaum, to the extent that he is commonly referred to as the
Baal HaChavos Daas. It is well known that in the
ksav hachtarah (letter of appointment) upon his acceptance as Rav of Lissa, his actual name was not mentioned—rather, the kehilla accepted upon themselves "the author of Chavos Daas." This sefer serves as a fundamental work on Yoreh De’ah in general and Hilchos Taharah in particular and has remained an indispensable staple on the desks of the greatest poskim in these weighty halachic matters. Over the years, various commentaries have been written on it, including the
hagahos of
Rabbi Akiva Eiger, and it is referenced thousands of times in the seforim of the poskim.

A rare and sought-after sefer!

This sefer contains
multiple signatures of the Gaon, Rav Aharon Tzvi Hirsch Weiszhoyz, Baal Ha’Otzar B’lohm, along with a beautiful lomdishe gloss (partially trimmed), seemingly in his own handwriting.

The Gaon, Rav Aharon Tzvi Hirsch Weiszhoyz, Baal Ha’Otzar B’lohm (5597–5667 / 1837–1907)
One of the great rabbanim of Stanislav, he was the prime talmid of the
Baal Shu”t Bar Li’oiy. In his youth, he shared a close friendship and was a chavrusa with the
Baal HaKochav MiYaakov of Hormilov. All who encountered him testified that he was destined for greatness. In his later years, he became a leading figure in the kehillah of Stanislav, establishing a beis medrash where he delivered his profound shiurim. Through marriage, he was the son-in-law of the
Gaon Rav Avraham Binyomin Kluger, son of the
Chochmas Shlomo, Av Beis Din of Brod. He founded the renowned
Ohr Torah Yeshiva in his city. He passed away without children (
lo hiniach zera kodesh). His chiddushim on Aggadah were tragically lost, and the little that remained was published under the title
Otzar B’lohm.
