Shimon K.H., who is likely the famous Gaon Rabbi Shimon Kafinhaagen, author of Or HaYashar. Rabbi Nathan Adler of Hannover (1783–1890), one of the prominent rabbis of his generation and a leading fighter against the Haskalah movement, studied in the great yeshiva of Rabbi Avraham Binga. Rabbi Nathan was ordained as a rabbi and served as the rabbi of Hannover, succeeding his father, Rabbi Mordechai. In 1843, after the passing of Rabbi Shlomo Hirsch, the rabbi of England, who had excommunicated the Maskilim, a significant debate broke out regarding who would be chosen as the rabbi of England. With the support of the leading Torah figures of the time, including his childhood friend, the author of Aruch LaNer, and the Chasam Sofer, Rabbi Nathan was appointed as the rabbi of England in 1845, despite the opposition of the Maskilim.
He authored an extensive commentary on the Targum Onkelos, called Netina LaGer, and a work on Targum Yonatan, called Ahavat Yonatan (in manuscript).
"…The esteemed Rabbi Nathan Adler zt"l, whom I knew well during my time in London in the year 1850 concerning the kolel matters, I found his heart to be loyal, great in Torah and fear of Hashem, righteous and straight…"
(Rabbi Shmuel Salant).
"…He is the great righteous Rabbi Nathan Adler Katz, Av Beis Din of the kehillah of Hannover, known to be a righteous and wise Torah scholar…" (Chasam Sofer).
