Heartwarming letter of Ha’Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Lipshitz Ba’al Tiferes Yisroel to his son R. Boruch of Landsberg
A beautiful handwritten letter from a loving father to his son. Handwritten and signed letter from Rabbi Yisroel Lipshitz Ba’al Tiferes Yisroel to his son Rabbi Baruch Yisrael AB" D Landsberg.
"Danzig, 12 of Tamuz…. It is now five o’clock in the morning, and I am awaiting your arrival next week… Please remember to bring the Gemora Nedarim and the sefer Margolios you borrowed from me since I need them… who stands with open arms to welcome you with much love, Ha’koton Yisrael Lipshitz."
The Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Lipshiz, author of Tiferes Yisroel on Mishnayos (1782-1861), was the son of Ha’Gaon Rabbi Gedalya, author of Regel Yisroel and grandson of the Ba’al Ohr Yisroel. He had many illustrious ancestors and descended from the Damesk Eliezer and Rabbi Shaul Wahl, who was king of Poland for one day (See intro to Tiferes Yisroel). He studied Torah with his father and was Rav in the Kehilos of Weronika, Dessau and others. He was appointed Rav in the large city of Danzig. He was known as a Tzadik, and during his years in Dessau, he often fasted for three days in a row and did not stop learning the entire time… His monumental sefer, Tiferes Yisroel, is considered one of the fundamental commentaries of Mishnayos since its printing. It took twenty years to print the sefer. His son R. Baruch partnered with his father in writing the sefer, and can be recognized by the abbreviation AB" Y (Amar Baruch Yisrael).
