HaGaon Rabbi Yosef Zvi Diner (1832-1912) was the spiritual leader of Jewry in the Netherlands and the revered rabbi of Amsterdam for forty years. Born in Krakow, he studied Torah from the renowned Rabbi Chaim Nathan Dembitzer and received rabbinic ordination from him. He also received ordination from the holy “Divrei Chaim” of Sanz. Initially, he immigrated to Deutschland and, at the behest of Rabbi Dov Ber Bamburger, the "Rav of Würzburg, " he was a Melamed in Mainz. In 1874, he was appointed as the Av Beis Din of Amsterdam, a position he faithfully served until his passing. Rabbi Diner made great efforts to promote Torah study throughout the Netherlands and endeavored to establish Torah centers everywhere. Unlike the prevailing practice at the time, where Jewish children studied in secular schools and only later attended Jewish schools, Rabbi Diner educated many students directly. In his later years, most of the rabbis in the Netherlands were his disciples. Among his works are “Chidushei HaRitzad” and “Hagahos” on the entire Talmud.
