Pe’er HaDor (Rambam), Amsterdam 5525 – First Edition – Inscription of the Gaon Rav Hertz Scheier, Av Beis Din of Mainz and Friend of the Chasam Sofer
Pe’er HaDor, a collection of She’eilos U’Teshuvos (responsa) by Rabbeinu Moshe ben Maimon, the Rambam, printed in Amsterdam, 5525 – First Edition.
On the title page, there is a handwritten inscription from the renowned Gaon,
Rav Hertz Scheier, Rosh Yeshiva and Av Beis Din of Mainz, as well as his signature (seemingly presenting his personal copy):
"May this be a gift and offering, a derashah given to the exceptional talmid chacham… the perfect chassan… the distinguished Rav Moshe Bamberg Segal… Adar 5522, from me, the insignificant Hertz ben my honored father and master, the true Gaon, Rav Tavli Scheier…"
The Renowned Gaon Rav Avraham Naftali Hertz Scheier (5514–5583) One of the great Rabbanim of Ashkenaz, a pillar of Torah and staunch defender of tradition. He served, like his father Rav Tavli Scheier, as Rosh Yeshiva in Mainz for 30 years and as Rav of the city for 20 years. Known for his asceticism and deep involvement in Kabbalah, he fasted frequently and studied the hidden Torah discreetly.
He maintained a close friendship with
Maran the Chasam Sofer, dating back to his youth when the Chasam Sofer learned under his father. His seforim include:
