The Rebbe, Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heshel Twersky of Machnovka (5655–5748), was one of the most esteemed and elder Admorim of the last generations. He was the son of the holy Rabbi Yosef Meir of Machnovka, grandson of the holy Rabbi Yitzchok’l of Skver and the Maggid of Chernobyl. After his father’s passing in 5677, he initially refused to accept the mantle of leadership, but at the urging of his uncle, Rabbi Dovid of Skver, he took on the role. Amidst the fierce persecution of religion in Soviet Russia under Stalinist rule, he moved to Moscow to uphold Yiddishkeit, for which he was exiled to Siberia. Through the intervention of the holy Rebbe, Rabbi Yaakov Yosef of Skver, he was released, yet he refused to leave Russia, insisting on his duty to sustain the spiritual life of the Jews there.
In 5725 (1965), he immigrated to Eretz Yisrael, reestablishing his court in Bnei Brak, where he became recognized as one of the great tzaddikim, and the elder of the Admorim from the Chernobyl dynasty.
