Handwritten and Autographed Letter by the Admor Rabbi Baruch Dovid Twersky of Horensteipel. Vienna, 1925

This letter was written by the Admor Rabbi Baruch Dovid Twersky to his cousin the Admor Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heschel of Kapyschnitz zt”l, regarding a shidduch suggested for the only son of his brother-in-law the Admor of Rashkov. Since the prospective young woman’s father, the philanthropist Chaim Bloch, was a resident of the city of Khatyn who frequented the Holy Court of the Kapyschitz, the Admor wished to inquire if the shidduch was indeed suitable for the Court of Rashkov.

Rabbi Baruch Dovid Twersky of Kalinkowitz (1875-1926) son Admor Rabbi Mordechai Dov of Horensteipel, and son-in-law of Admor Rabbi Shlomo Zalmina of Rashkov. Rabbi Baruch Dovid studied under the tutelage of his esteemed father, and in 1903, succeeded his father as Admor of Horensteipel.

In 1904, Rabbi Baruch Dovid reestablished his Chassidic court in Kalinkowitz in Reisin, where he assembled all his father’s chassidim from Reisin and Lithuania. Like his father, he was an outstanding Torah scholar whose reputation preceded him. His father charged him with the monumental task of arranging his teshuvos into Shu”t Emek Sheilah and bringing them to print. In 1922, R. Baruch Dovid fled Russia to Vienna where he passed away four years later at the age of 51. His chiddushim on the Torah and his halachic teshuvos were compiled into the sefer Vaivorech Dovid which was published together with his father’s sefer Toirei Zohov on the laws of interest.
