Toldot Yitzchak – Amsterdam, 1708
Sefer Toldot Yitzchak, a commentary on the Torah by Rabbi Yitzchak Caro, is printed in Amsterdam in 1708. The title page mentions that he was the grandfather of the renowned Rabbi Yosef Caro, but some claim he was actually his uncle and teacher. The book was printed by Rabbi Shimon Katz of Amsterdam, who notes at the end of the book that he had access to two early editions of Toldot Yitzchak and edited the text based on both.
It was published by the partners: Rabbi Yaakov Elwarish Soto, Rabbi Moshe Even Yakar, and Rabbi Binyamin Di Yonah, in Amsterdam in 1708.
The book opens with the approval of the Rabbis of Amsterdam, Rabbi Shlomo Di Oliviera and Rabbi Shlomo Aylon, as well as an introduction by the author, in which he details the hardships he endured during the expulsion from Spain and Portugal. He writes, "I fled to the land of Turgamah as a refuge, and tragically, all the male members of my family, great and small, perished, with titles like those of the kings…". This led him to write this book, as the Torah is the only legacy that remains everlasting for humanity.
